Hoy from Stromness

Hoy from Stromness
Watercolour
25 x 36 cm

The final part of our short journey to Orkney takes us into the approaches to Stromness. These sheltered waters are quiet now, but during both World Wars they must have been very busy. Scapa Flow was an important naval base and there would have been constant movement of ships out to the Atlantic and back. The old concrete bunkers and gun-emplacements can still be seen lining the shore.

  2. Thanks René. With watercolours, I find that the more simple they are the more beautiful they look.

  3. Hi there Keith!.... Rene has beat me to the punch with his very accurate description of your work!

It is consistently of high quality... and the quality of "serenity and spaciousness" that Rene mentioned... is especially a constant.

I always marvel at the seeming simplicity... yet compexity of your use of colour and creation of space. A marvellous piece to join your collection of fine art Keith!

    Good Painting!
    Warmest regards,
    Bruce

  4. I know this view Keith and it took me right back to my holiday there a few years ago. You have captured the mood of the place perfectly. The sky is especially lovely and I like the way you have painted the mountain area which I believe are cliffs on the other side where the old man of hoy is, though maybe that is off to the right! it has been a few years since I was there. The land is nice too as well as the sea. It all sits together beautiful, a fine painting.

  6. Thanks Caroline.

Yes the cliffs are on the other side of the hills. This side is more sheltered from the weather.

  7. Good morning Keith!... Couldn't resist! Neither one of us post our "throw aways"... All a part of the exploration and process!

What I should probably have said is that the quality of your posted works selectively reflect your capabilities... and your pride in what you do!

I also forgot to mention that I much enjoyed the "trip" idea... felt that I was along with you as guide! Nice!

    Good Painting!
    Warmest regards,
    Bruce

  9. Very true Barbra Joan. 'Simple' doesn't mean 'Easy'!
